Back Road to a Hidden Valley
Now spring has arrived
On
a mountain with no name
In
early morning haze.

Nobushi settled in Vermont for its distinct
four seasons and the mountains and valleys that reminded him of Nagano,
Japan, where he spent his childhood. Back Road
to A Hidden Valley, his first collection of Vermont
images, is his homage to the 17th-century Japanese Haiku Master,
Matsuo Basho, best known for "The Narrow Road to the Interior",
a travel diary and an accompanying collection of haikus. Basho
was a journalist and frequently journeyed on foot to the interior
of Japan. The ancient back road that Basho traveled along passed
by the hamlet in which Nobushi spent his childhood. To Nobushi,
Basho’s haikus are like snapshots of each place he visited.
The astute observation and the brevity of words with which Basho
translated his perceptions into his works taught young Nobushi the
ability to recognize the remarkable nature of seemingly ordinary
scenes. |
